Color Sorting Mats Free Printable
Young children love to learn about the colors of the world through books and activities. They not only need to learn to identify colors and the color word names, but also to differentiate among all of the colors. One easy way to to practice this skill is with printable color sorting mats.

Color Sorting Mats
This set of free printable color sorting mats are a great way to help young children learn colors.
What Is Included
This set of printable color sorting mats includes mats and pictures for 11 basic colors:
- Red
- Orange
- Yellow
- Green
- Blue
- Purple
- Pink
- Black
- Brown
- Gray
- White
There is one mat for each color and six small images for each color that need to be cut out.

What You Will Need
If you have a computer with a printer, you can create this activity for your child today. Here are some things you will need and a few additional suggestions.
- Printer
- Printer paper
- If you would like to make the mats a little sturdier, you could use card stock paper
- Scissors
- If you would like to cut the pieces out faster, you could use a small paper cutter
- If you would like to make them really sturdy so they will last longer, you could laminate them using laminating pouches and a laminator
How to Use the Color Sorting Mats
You have very little to prepare in order for your child to be able to use the mats.
- Print out the mats and the pictures.
- If you are only working on a few colors with your child, just print out those pages.
- Cut out the six color pictures for whatever colors you are working on.
- Cut out a few other color pictures so that your child has a few colors to differentiate.
Here’s an example:
- If you are helping your child recognize the color purple, print out the mat for the color purple.
- Print out the purple color pictures and pictures for at least one other color so that your child can choose the purple pictures.
- You can use as many or as few color mats as you would like.

How to Store the Color Sorting Mats
Once you’ve gone through the trouble of printing out these color sorting mats and pictures, you’re not going to want to lose them. You could keep the mats in plastic bins and the color pictures would fit perfectly in basic quart size storage bags.
